Computing at Ryton on Dunsmore Provost Williams Academy
At Ryton-on-Dunsmore, we teach computing through the Purple Mash curriculum. Purple Mash has recently been revamped and updated ensuring the highest quality resources in order to support and deliver a broad and balanced Computing Curriculum
Impact
1. Children will have developed the knowledge, skills and understanding to help them access and use a range of technology.
2. Children will know how to use technology responsibly and how to stay safe online.
3. Children’s skills will have progressed to enable them to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum.
4. A love for the subject.
Intent
Our Computing curriculum provides all children with a high-quality education in Computing, which enables them to access an ever changing and growing digital world. We provide children with the ability to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding, by adapting and following the Purple scheme of work, through Purple Mash recommended programs.
We deliver this program using laptops, a selection of coding devices and Ipads as well as engaging in unplugged lessons.
Computing matters to the future of the UK, but much more importantly it’s about giving every child the essential thinking skills they need to succeed in our digital, connected society.
Implementation
The Purple Mash scheme of work is built around an innovative progression where computing content has been organised into interconnected networks. It is created by experts, using the latest pedagogical research and teacher feedback with resources that can be further adapted to individual learners’ needs. The vision of the Purple Mash is to provide every child in England with a world-leading computing education. Timetabled lessons each week focus on this scheme of work, as well as Computing being used as an additional tool within our lessons to help children become creative thinkers and access learning in a variety of ways. Online safety is taught throughout each unit as well as when issues arise. The children in Early Years provision will also be exposed to the understanding of online safety as they explore the world around them and how technology is an everyday part of their learning and understanding of the world.
Our curriculum allows children to develop the three interconnected areas of: Computer science, information technology and digital literacy, whilst focusing on developing pupils’ ‘computational thinking’. The curriculum supports pupils to code amazing programs, keep themselves safe online, think like a computer programmer whilst providing tools for our staff to teach the subject with confidence
As with all subjects, our school’s computing curriculum is captured in a well research scheme of work which clearly shows progression and ensures teaching activities build on existing knowledge and understanding.
