We believe it is essential that children understand how grammar and punctuation shape meaning, so these elements are not taught in isolation. Instead, pupils learn the grammar and punctuation they need within the context of their writing lessons, supported by additional sessions where necessary. This approach reflects the expectations of the National Curriculum for English, which requires pupils to apply grammar and punctuation knowledge purposefully within real writing rather than as disconnected skills.
