Home Learning

Following consultation with parents and staff, we have adopted a consistent and purposeful approach to homework across each Key Stage. This ensures that tasks are age-appropriate, manageable, and support learning at home.


•     EYFS, KS1, and KS2 will each follow a tailored ‘homework diet’ designed to complement their stage of development and curriculum focus.


•     In EYFS and KS1, there may be occasions when additional projects or suggestions are sent home to help embed key knowledge and skills in a fun and meaningful way.


Our aim is to foster positive home learning habits, reinforce classroom learning, and provide opportunities for children to share their learning with you.

 

📚 Reading for Pleasure – Sharing Stories at Home
As part of our commitment to fostering a lifelong love of reading, all children will regularly bring home a Reading for Pleasure book. These books are chosen to spark curiosity, imagination, and joy - and we encourage you to enjoy them together at home.


Whether it’s a bedtime story, a weekend read, or a quiet moment after school, sharing books helps build confidence, vocabulary, and a love of language.  Let’s celebrate the magic of reading - one story at a time!

 

Reception Homework – Early Foundations for Learning
In Reception, our homework approach focuses on nurturing early literacy skills and fostering a love of reading through simple, engaging routines at home.
🔤 Phonics - Children will bring home Read Write Inc. practice sounds and a Book Bag Book to share with you. These resources are carefully matched to their current phonics learning and help reinforce decoding skills in a fun and familiar way.
📖 Reading - When children are ready, they will begin bringing home reading books daily, along with a Reading Record Book. We encourage families to enjoy these books together and use the record to share comments on progress, enjoyment, and any areas where support may be helpful.

 

These early experiences lay the foundation for confident, fluent reading and help build strong home-school partnerships.

 

📘 Key Stage 1 Homework Overview
Our homework approach in Years 1 and 2 is designed to support key learning, build confidence, and foster positive home-school partnerships. Tasks are purposeful, age-appropriate, and linked to current classroom learning.
Year 1
•     📖 Reading-  Children will bring home a phonics reading book that directly supports their current learning in school.
•     ➕ Maths Task Weekly tasks will reinforce essential concepts such as number recognition, counting, and early calculation strategies.
•     English, History or Geography: Children may receive short tasks linked to current topics, helping them explore ideas and build vocabulary.

 

Year 2
•     📖 Reading-  Regular reading at home continues to be a key focus, with opportunities to discuss books and build fluency.
•     English or Maths Tasks: These may include key knowledge work such as number bonds, times tables, spelling, or grammar activities.
•     🌍 Topic-Based Tasks - related to History or Geography will help deepen understanding and encourage curiosity about the world.

 

 📚 Key Stage 2 Homework Overview
Homework in Key Stage 2 is designed to reinforce classroom learning, develop independent study habits, and deepen pupils’ understanding across the curriculum. Each week, children will be expected to complete the following:
•     📖 Reading

•     ✍️ English Task - This may include SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar), comprehension activities, reading-related tasks, written pieces, or research linked to current learning.
•     ➕ Maths Task - Tasks may involve practising times tables, solving problems, or completing activities that reinforce key mathematical concepts.
•     🌍 Topic-Based Tasks or Projects - Occasionally, children will be given additional tasks to enrich their understanding of current topics - these may be creative, investigative, or cross-curricular in nature.


This structured approach supports progression, encourages independence, and helps children take pride in their learning beyond the classroom.

 

Pupils will bring home a reading book and use their Reading Journal to record reflections, comments, and responses to what they’ve read.

 

As children progress through Upper Key Stage 2, particularly in Year 5 and Year 6, they may be given additional activities to support their learning and readiness for the next stage of education. This will often include:


•     📘 SATs revision tasks to consolidate key knowledge and boost confidence
•     🧠 Extension activities that encourage deeper thinking and application of skills
•     🕒 Opportunities to practise independent learning, time management, and personal responsibility


We encourage parents and carers to support this transition by fostering independence at home - helping children take ownership of their learning, manage their homework routines, and reflect on their progress.


Together, we can empower pupils to approach Year 6 with confidence, curiosity, and resilience.
