Phonics- RWI

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics based english programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.  The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However some children will need to access this programme beyond the age of 7 to meet individual needs.

How the Read Write Inc. phonics works - a parent/carer's guide

A guide to how Read Write Inc. phonics works and how parents and carers can support their children to become confident, enthusiastic readers.

As part of our phonics curriculum offer in EYFS we plan for opportunities for the children to:

· Enjoy stories in small groups and 1-1

· Join in with familiar rhymes and story phrases focusing on words that rhyme

· Continue a rhyming string

· Begin to count and clap syllables in words

· Listen for words that start with the same sound

· Listen and develop an awareness of sound talk through games

· Recognise initial sound in name

· Begin to recognise words with the same initial sound

· Confidently orally blend words

· Further develop phonological awareness through song talk and language games

Children in nursery are introduced to 'Fred' and begin to play Fred Games.  They are also introduced to Set 1 sounds. Children in Reception build on this by learning to recognise diagraphs, read red words and begin independently reading text.
