🏅Physical Education at Ryton-on-Dunsmore

At Ryton‑on‑Dunsmore CE Academy, our aim is to promote the physical, social and emotional well‑being of every child through a progressive and comprehensive PE programme. We recognise the vital role that Physical Education plays in encouraging healthy lifestyle choices and developing essential life skills such as teamwork, resilience and leadership.

All pupils, regardless of their starting points or abilities, have equal access to high‑quality PE provision that is challenging, engaging and responsive to individual needs. Through our curriculum, we foster positive attitudes towards physical activity, nurture a growth mindset, and instil the Christian values of fairness, respect and perseverance.

All children participate in at least two hours of Physical Education each week, enabling them to become physically confident in ways that support their health and fitness. We follow the Complete PE programme, which provides a clear, progressive structure and ensures pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time.

Early Years and Key Stage 1
In Foundation Stage and KS1, the focus is on developing fundamental movement skills, including agility, balance and coordination. These skills are taught through dance, gymnastics, ball skills and athletics, encouraging children to adapt, refine and apply their abilities across different areas of PE.

Key Stage 2
In KS2, pupils continue to build on these foundations, learning how to apply and adapt their skills across a range of sports. They develop the ability to link movements, create sequences and work collaboratively in team contexts. Pupils in Years 3 and 4 also take part in swimming lessons at the Alan Higgs Centre, taught by qualified instructors, ensuring they develop essential water safety and swimming competence.

A Culture of Excellence, Inclusion and Well‑Being
Our PE provision reflects our unwavering commitment to nurturing the physical, emotional and social development of every child. By setting high expectations, offering a rich and varied curriculum, and fostering a culture of excellence and inclusivity, we empower pupils to flourish both in PE and beyond. The positive attitudes, physical capabilities and personal development demonstrated by our pupils are testament to this approach.

Our emphasis on holistic well‑being contributes to improved mental health, stronger social skills and increased overall happiness. Through both curriculum lessons and extra‑curricular opportunities, children are introduced to a wide variety of sports, including netball, football, hockey, tennis, benchball, dodgeball, athletics and rounders. A range of after‑school clubs further supports pupils in developing their skills, confidence and enjoyment of physical activity.
